Sport Programme at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College

Taupo-nui-a-Tia College has so many varied sport's activities that suit everyone.  From badminton to basketball, rowing to rugby, our school offers it all. Boasting many successful sporting accolades including (but not limited to) Patrick Bevan, Noeline Taurua, Nicole Van Der Kay, our school has the potential to develop your skills. We also have college inter-whanau and inter-house competitions - these include Colours Day, Athletics Sports, Cross Country, Ki-o-rahi and Swimming Sports for students to participate in and earn house points. 

Students are able to use sporting equipment during interval and lunch break time from the sports coordinators office in the gym. We encourage students to visit for all extra curricular sports activities.

Basketball


We offer basketball for both girls and boys.

Our teams play in the local Lake Taupo Basketball league.

Our premier teams travel over the North Island for elite competition.  They also compete at the Tip Off Tournament, BOP Champs, 3x3 events, Premiership and Nationals.

Rugby


We have U14, U16 and 1st XV boys rugby teams.  They play in the BOP Rugby competition 

Our girls 1st XV play in the Chiefs Manawa competition.

King Country Rugby Union offers 7s, 10s and 15 aside local programmes.

BOP Rugby offers 7s in Term 1 and Term 4

Netball


We currently have 8 netball teams that compete in the Taupō Netball Centre competition each Saturday.  

Our Premier senior team has the opportunity to attend regional tournaments and the Upper North Island Secondary Schools tournament during Winter Tournament Week.

Whilst predominantly girls, boys are able to play in the local league.

Hockey


We currently have 3 boys and 2 girls hockey teams who compete in the BOP Rugby competition.  They travel throughout the region for games on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Our hockey teams have the opportunity to compete at tournaments around the country during Winter Tournament Week.

Football


We currently have 2 boys and 1 girls football team.  

They play on Wednesdays in a College organised league with schools in Rotorua and Tokoroa.

Teams have the opportunity to compete at tournaments around the country during Winter Tournament Week.

Volleyball


We offer volleyball for both boys and girls. 

Seniors compete in the BOP Champs during Term 1.  The Juniors during Term 4.

Seniors have the opportunity to compete at Nationals and the Juniors at the North Island Champs.

Throughout Term 2 on Wednesday nights we offer an internal social league for our Juniors.  During Term 3, it's more competitive competing against teams from Tauhara College.

Beach Volleyball is offered during Term 4 and over the summer holidays.

Badminton


Badminton is offered at the College on Wednesday and Friday afterschool in the gym.

BOP Badminton runs qualifying tournaments for a finals competition during Term 2 & 3.

​Each year there is the opportunity to play for the Hardisty Cup in Turangi against local Colleges.

Adventure Racing 


We have a number of junior and senior teams that compete at adventure racing events throughout the year. The teams have regular training sessions to prepare for these events.

These include NZSS Adventuring racing/ Go-4-12 Adventure Racing, NISS Hilary Challenge 6 hours, Torpedo 7 Get2Go Challenge and  Secondary Schools Hillary Challenge Secondary School Champs.

Cycling


Most of our cyclist are apart of the Taupo Cycling Club. We have road, track, mountain and Cyclocross events offered to the students throughout the year.

WAIKATO BOP SCHOOLS XC MTB CHAMPS,  ŠKODA North Island School MTB Championships, ŠKODA North Island School Road Championships, ŠKODA North Island and National School Track Championships, ŠKODA North Island Cyclocross Championships, ŠKODA Northern Tour, ŠKODA National School Road Championships, - ŠKODA National School MTB Championships.

Rowing 


Our rowing students train and comepete with the local Late Taupo Rowing Club on the waterfront. They compete in regattas starting mid-December through until the end of March. The students represent the school at the following events; North Island Secondary Schools Regatta and NZ Secondary Schools Maadi Cup

Clay Target Shooting 


Clay target shooting is run through the Taupō Clay Target Club. Every Wednesday the Club is open for students to practice. There are a number of events that students enter through the year finishing up with the big event North Island & NZ Secondary School Championships.

SquashTennis


Squash is run through the local Taupo Squash Club. Students have the opportunity to enter into the BOPSS individual and team Squash Championships in Term 2. There is also Squash Nationals in term 3.

Triathlon & Swimming


Swimming- Most of our students belong to the Taupō Swimming Club. They have the opportunity to compete at the following events:
Open Water Swimming Championships
BOPSS Swimming Championships , NZSS Open Water Swimming Championships, North Island SS Swimming Championships,NZSS Swimming Championships

TriathlonOur students who compete in Tri belong to the Tri- Sport Club. They compete in the following events over the summer;  Kinlich Tri, BOP Tri, Ironkidz, Taranaki Tri, XTERRA and  NZSS Champs.

Equestrian


Our students who have horses belong to pony clubs within Taupō. They attend a number of events throughout the year, some events include; Central Plateau Secondary Schools Gymkana,  Central Plateau SS Show Jumping Competition and North Island secondary schools horse trials.

Cross Country & Athletics


As well as our interschool cross county and athletics there are BOPSS events that are offered. 

Term 1- BOPSS/Mid Islands Athletics and WaiBop Athletics Championships.

Term 2- BOPSS Cross Country Championships and  WaiBop Cross Country Championships.

Snow Sports


Each year our students get the opportunity to participate in the BOPSS Skiing & Snowboard Championships at Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu. We take the team up the mountain a week or so before the event to have a training run.

Ki-o-Rahi


Ki-o-Rahi is played in Term 1 for seniors and term 4 for juniors. There are regional tournaments run in Turangi with the opportunity to compete at nationals across the country.

Sailing


Sailing is run through the local Taupo Sailing Club. In Term 1 there is the Secondary School Sailing Regatta that our students attend.

Waka Ama is in term 4 for juniors and term 1 for seniors. Our students get the opportunity to compete at the Waka Ama regionals and NZSS Waka Ama Champs.
