Taupo-nui-a-Tia College Dancers rocket to the top!

At the Regional DanceNZMade interschool competition held on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th of August, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College dancers bared their souls and left their hearts on the dance floor.  Since Term 1, dancers have been preparing for this competition.  The instructions from their dance teacher, Iggy Gloy was to tell a story, to give something to the audience and leave them thinking about the message of the dance.  This is not only for the benefit of the competition but also for the dancers’ NCEA internal assessment work.  Movement should have meaning and purpose, rather than just moving to the music.  This proved to be very valuable as TNT not only walked away as the Regional Champions but scored 100/100 from both judges in their dance titled: “Border Crossing”.  Choreographer, Carissa Yeoman, found inspiration from images she had seen on the news about families trying to escape from their existing lives by crossing the border into a new country.  The images contained so many different emotions ranging from grief, anger, frustration, fear, worry, happiness and jubilation, which were all captured within this dance.

Taupo-nui-a-Tia College dancers also excelled in choreographing pieces for this competition. Y13 students Hannah and Lucy Golebiowski choreographed 5 solos and 3 groups – all their solo choreography pieces placed either 1st or 2nd  in their respective categories and 2 of their groups from Hilltop School (Year 5&6 and Year 7&8) came first and will represent Taupo at Nationals.  First time choreographers, Year 10 students Taryn Drysdale and Shazanae Corin-Goldsmith created a delightful piece for Taupo Primary’s Y3-Y6 students.  Y11 students Grace Bilbie and Grace Merwyn choreographed the winning Y9-Y10 entry for Taupo-nui-a-Tia College – “Child Poverty”, as well as their own solos which placed in the top 3 of the Y11 Category.  Grace Bilbie further choreographed Taupo Intermediate’s Y7-8 group and the winning solo for Hilltop School in the Y7 category.

Representing Taupo at the DanceNZMade Nationals from Taupo-nui-a-Tia College are:  Hannah Golebiowski (solo), Grace Merwyn (solo), Child Poverty (Y9-10 group) and Border Crossing (Open Category group).

In the Solo competition, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College gained:

1st and 2nd in the Year 9 category (Aimee Coleman and Enya Abele)

1st in the Year 10 category (Onera Beck)

2nd and 3rd in the Y11 category (Grace Bilbie and Grace Merwyn)
