Gateway Program

GATEWAY

Gateway is known as the bridge between school and the world beyond. This is an initiative which enables senior students to participate in structured workplace learning across a range of industries and vocational areas which is assessed and evaluated through unit standards or achievement standards.

The Gateway programme offers students, who choose to participate, an appreciation of the employability skills looked for including: communication, self-management, willingness to learn, reliability and a positive attitude. It is also an excellent tool to help students navigate future career paths.

At Taupo-nui-a-Tia we are fortunate to be able to offer this valued student driven programme to all our year 11, 12 and 13 students. 

Utilising work placements while still at school, students are provided with opportunities to try out potential careers, build links with workplaces and gain experience.

Through Gateway further opportunities may also open up such as apprenticeships and employment. 

Students are generally out of school one day each week in a work environment for a minimum of 10 placement days. However placements can be carried out during a school day, weekend or in the school holidays.

We are privileged to live in a community which supports and sees value in this initiative with local employers continuing to provide quality placements.

2018 has seen a huge variety of Gateway placements and learning opportunities open up to our students. It is wonderful to see so many taking advantage of gaining real work experiences, learning on the job, building relationships and networks.  

We consistently see so much being gained from this programme in terms of building confidence, work readiness and self-management.  

We have had some very successful participants go on to gain apprenticeships and employment through their placements and once again we thank our hugely supportive employers and community.
