This year we have had the assistance of the Squash Club through Tanya Colyer the club coach and have entered students in various squash competitions with some success. Our boys competed strongly in the second division BOP schools competition and travelled to Nelson to compete in the Nationals.

Squash Team 2009 |
In 2009, squash proved to be a popular sport at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College with more than twenty students competing for the school.
One girls’ and two boys’ teams travelled to Rotorua and Te Puke to compete in the Bay of Plenty Secondary School Teams Championships, hungry for a title. Unfortunately, TNT could not pull it off. The girls’ team finished in the top eight. The boys’ A team finished an impressive 3rd and the B team improved on their bottom seeding by finishing 10th. Everyone showed determination, commitment, and sportsmanship.
There were also some notable individual performances this year. Shane and Damian Hemopo competed at the Milo All Stars Junior World Championships in Malaysia with Shane placing in the top 20 and Damian in the top 40. Also, Shane won division 1 at the New Zealand Open and came 13th at the NZ Junior Championships in the U19 division. Shane and Damian competed in the Taupo Squash Club junior club champs recently. Shane edged out his younger brother in the final.
We aim to continue to build squash at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College next year. With the number of junior players coming through, I am sure we will see more success in squash in the future.
