Boys Hockey: Congratulations to Ethan Ball (Under 18s) and Liam Brake (Under 15s) for making it into the Bay of Plenty Hockey Reps.

Mountain Biking: Congratulations to our competitors on 22 May.  Successful Juniors were Ryan Hunt 3rd and Brett Stokman 4th.  Brett Wilkie competed in the Downhill Race and finished 18th.  Well done to Brett and Ryan who competed at short notice in the NZSS MTB Champs in Cambridge where Brett finished in 2nd place and Ryan in 4th place.

Waikato Chiefs Under 18s - Congratulations to Ian Walker for being selected for the Waikato Chiefs Under 18 training camp to be held during the holidays.

NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championship 2010 - Four Taupo-nui-a-Tia College students participated in the 37th annual NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships held in Waikanae recently. With nearly 1200 competitors from 100 schools taking part, there were some notable results: Year 9 Girls 3km (113 runners) 8th Aisling Bowden (11.16 Senior Boys 6km (232 runners) 43rd Cameron Todd (21.35) Junior Girls 3km (133 runners) 6th Nicole van der Kaay (10.56) – fastest BOP time 26th Ella Dick (11.27)

Bowls - Amber Prior and Tayla Fitches have qualified for the Bay of Plenty Lawn bowls team!

Cycling - Nicole Scott was second in the girls U19 section of the 100km Flyer held on 27 March.  Her time was 3 hours 41 minutes.

Kiwanis Fun Run 11 April 2010 – Congratulations to the Taupo Times Secondary School Challenge Shield winners:  Libby Owen, Nicole Way, Sarah Congdon, Sarah Fraser.

Shooting The 22nd Oceania Clay Target Championships were held in April.  Congratulations to James Cannard who was 4th individual out of 38 juniors.  James is now part of the New Zealand team!

Team Triathlon – Karapiro – Thursday 11 March: Junior Girls Team - 1st – Brooke Taylor, Ella Reardon and Nicole Scott, 2nd – Jaymie King, Aisling Bowden and Stephanie Johnson

NZSS Triathlon Nationals – Fantastic Top Ten Results!: Josh Kenyon - 3rd , Nicole Van der Kaay - 2nd , Cameron Todd - 5th, James Weal 7th, Glen Fraser 7th. The Senior Boys team came 5th, Junior Boys Team came 6th, Junior Girls team came 3rd, Junior Girls B team 4th, Intermediate Girls A team 7th .

Sailing Regatta Algies Bay 24 – 26 March: Taylor Griffin, Finlay Norris, Josh Monro and Keith Inglis did really well at the Algies Bay420 Secondary Schools team regatta.  This was their first away regatta sailing together and were up against some very strong schools including St Kents, Westlake Boys, Auckland Grammar, Keri Keri and Pakuranga. They came 4th in their fleet – which is awesome.  Their next event is the National Secondary Schools Team Racing which is to be held here in Taupo 12 – 16 April, with 35 secondary school teams entered.

Touch Rugby: Zonal Touch – 27 March: The mixed toruch team was in Pool B with Forest View and Edgecumbe.  They placed 2nd, beating Edgecumbe and losing by two to Forest View. Next was the cross-overs where they played 1st from Pool A - Trident. Trident was the only team they drew with in the Zonal 2 games, and they beat Trident quite comfortably!!  This put them in the final for 1st/2nd, they again came up against Forest View, which they beat by two!!  Overall, the team has placed 1st at the Zonal 2 and 3 games, and as the top four qualify, they are heading to the Secondary Schools New Zealand National Tournament in Palmerston North.

NZ Secondary Schools Mountainbike Nationals – Levin: Overall results: U15 boys – Brett Stokman – 3rd, Frank Sutton – 11th , Nick Barnes – 15th, U16 Boys – Ryan Hunt 4th=, Matt Cederwall 7th=, U19 Boys – Ben Watson -18th, Downhill – Brett Wilkie -22nd 

Rodeo: Congratulations to Aaron Church who has moved into the Open Grade in both bull riding and team roping.  Currently Aaron is lying second in the All Round Rookie title along with achieving other multiple top 10 and top 20 placings in the rookie division and in the open division. 

Across the Lake Swim Saturday 27 February: Congratulations to Mitch Nairn – 1st in a time of 50.05 and Cameron Todd, 2nd in time of 52.01. Bianca Bradley was the first woman home. 

NZ Age Group Swimming Championships in Christchurch 1 – 6 March: Four students attended the NZ Age Group Swimming Championships in Christchurch on the 1st to the 6th of March, with fantastic results! Bianca Bradley (16 yrs) – bronze 100 and 200m butterfly.  She swam the 200m in a new Bay of Plenty Age Group record.  Other finals were the 100 freestyle (4th) and 200 freestyle (7th). Glen Fraser (13 yrs) – Silver in the 50 and 100m Breaststroke, swimming the 50m breaststroke in a new Bay of Plenty Age Group record.  Other finals were the 50m butterfly (6th) 200m breaststroke (8th) and 100 butterfly (10th). Mitch Nairn (16 yrs) swam in six finals – 200m backstroke (4th), 1500 freestyle (5th), 100 backstroke (5th), 200 freestyle (5th), 400 freestyle (7th), 50 backstroke (8th). Patrick McCarty (16 yrs) had two swims in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

North Island Secondary Schools Athletics – Wellington - 20/21 March, Congratulations to the following students on these fantastic results: Nicole van der Kaay – 1st 3000metres with a personal best, Ashleigh Sando – 2nd 100m hurdles, 5th Triple Jump, 6th 300m hurdles, Caleb Heke – 3rd 200m with a personal best, 5th 100m also a personal best, Ruta Wall - 6th Javelin, Julia Hamilton – 6th Long Jump, Ella Dick – 6th 1500m 

Clay Target Shooting: The nationals for sporting clay target shooting were held 20 – 21 February.  Congratulations to James Cannard who came third and is in the NZ team.  Michael Wilkie was fourth and will be the first reserve for the NZ team. 

Equestrian: Hannah Burnett-Grant is having huge success in her equestrian sport.  She is NZ National Showjumping Junior Champion.  She came third in the Pony Grandprix overall after winning the final round on her pony Mighty Maximus.  Hannah is third in the world for International Equestrian Federation Junior Showjumping and has been shortlisted for the Youth Olympic Squad to go to Singapore – the final team to be announced soon. 

Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Showjumping – Edgecumbe – 24 February: Our team of Libby Owen, Jonti Owen, Anna Koster-Birdsall, Tash deKroon and Kasey Lawson were placed 5th overall at the end of the competition.  Most Valued Player:  Anna Koster-Birdsall. 

Bay of Plenty One Day Event – 10 March: The two Taupo-nui-a-Tia College equestrian teams competed on March 10th at the Bay of Plenty One Day Event.  The Taupo Red team came 2nd and the Green team came 4th.  The teams have new uniforms and the organizers of the event during prize-giving mentioned how smart Taupo-nui-a-Tia looked!

Equestrian - Hannah Burnett- Grant   won the Junior Rider title at the NZ national showjumping champsionships in Christchurch

ATHLETICS Ella Dick placed 3rd in the 14 year olds 1500m race in the Porritt Classic on 13th February in Hamilton.  She also competed in the NZ Nationals in Timaru in the holidays and gained a second place in the 3000m.  She placed 6th in the 1500m.

Ashleigh Sando has been chosen for a development squad in preparation for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.  She jumped 1.68m in the NZ Nationals in Timaru taking second place in the junior high jump.  She came 7th in the Junior Triple Jump and 8th in the 100m senior hurdles.  In the Tauranga Twilights she was the 1st senior in the 100m hurdles and 1st in the senior woman’s high jump.  She also competed in the Cooks Classic gaining a 3rd in the senior 100m hurdles and in the Porritt Classic also a 3rd in the senior 100m hurdles and a 2nd in the senior high jump.

EQUESTRIAN North Island Secondary Schools Show jumping Champs held at St Peters School, Cambridge 30 October 2009 - Team: Scott Groombridge, Julia Familton, Anna Koster-Birdsall, Madie Florence. Overall result: team was 8th out of 50 teams. Hannah Burnett-Grant came first in the Junior Rider Series event at the NZ Showjumping Championships held in Christchurch in February.

GOLF Grace Senior has been playing outstanding golf over the holidays and is now on a 4 handicap.  Her aim is to get to a 3 in order for selection.

MINI STOCK CAR RACING Sam Pritchard placed 4th overall out of 173 competitors in the NZ Mini Stock Car Championships held 12th & 13th February.

MULTISPORT At the recent Kinloch Triathlon Cameron Todd placed 3rd in the U19 Contact Cup and 10th overall. He also recently competed in Australia and despite the heat was competitive. He also placed 2nd in the Avanti Plus Cycle Zone Sprint Triathlon in Rotorua.

Nicole van der Kaay continues her run of successes both in and out of the water. She was recently invited to trial for the Bay of Plenty District under 14 Surf lifesavers team on 3rd January and was selected in the team of 5 girls and 5 boys to compete in the Interdistrict Championships at Omaha Beach Auckland. Their team won the championship and took home the trophy. Nicole also placed 3rd in the Kinloch Contact trophy Age 13-15.  She gained 8th in the Avanti Plus Cycle Zone Sprint Triathlon.

Josh Kenyon placed 2nd in the Tin Man U19 Triathlon, 6th overall and 2nd in his age group in the Surf Breaker Triathlon.  He gained a 3rd place in the Avanti Plus Cycle Zone Sprint Triathlon

SAILING Keith Inglis placed 1st overall in the Junior Sail Regatta held in February.  He won four out of the six races and came second in the other two races, taking out first place overall.

SWIMMING Swim NZ Open Water Championships Mitchell Nairn - 2nd 16-17 yr 5 km,

Sarah Fraser - 4th 16-17 yr 10 km and 5 km races.

Swimming NZ Tri Series Tour Bianca Bradley, Sarah Fraser and Mitchell Nairn competed with NZ top age group swimmers.

Joe Sutton placed third in the Boys Doubles in the Hawkes Bay Junior Open U12s and was the third ranked BOP player in the Waikato Boys Tennis Champs.

Over the holidays the U/16 Te Hikuwai o Tuwharetoa, who represented Tuwharetoa won the Maori Nationals U/16 Taitamahine Title. The team consisted of several TNT students:

Chelsea Katene - Captain, Nadia Matautia, Cala-Jane Chapman, Te Rauhina Wall, Samantha Mita-Morgan, Phoenix Hepi and Waimarie Stone, the other girls selected from the Tuwharetoa Region are from other schools.

OTHER SPORTS Congratulations also to Aaron Church who continues taking out titles in the Rodeos. Also to Keith Inglis who is training hard for his successful path in Sailing. We watch your progresses with interest. It is also important to mention those daredevils who have put in hours of training and competing for the Mountain Bike series and also to all those students who have been up at the skateboard rink performing very awe inspiring moves. Well worth a watch.

TRIATHLON: Congratulations to the following students who competed in the 2009 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Grand Final on the Gold Coast, Australia: Cameron  Todd (6th), John Glanville (10th), Josh Kenyon (20th) in the 16 – 19 Male AG Sprint, Shea Reardon (18th) in the 16 – 19 Female AG Sprint, And John Glanville who finished 5th in the 2009 Gold Coast ITU Aquathlon World Championships in the 16-19 Male age group. 

TOUCH: Kristina Simeona attended the NZ Touch Academy camp during the last school holidays.

 

RODEO: Aaron Church (who was in Australia in the holidays competing in the trans-Tasman rodeo competition) is also the current reigning NZ National Junior Rodeo champion.  He is competing at the rodeo here in Taupo on December 29th, and hoping to defend his title.

RUGBY - GIRLS: Congratulations to Nahkita Wilson-Rogers and Jahlee Rangi who have both made the BOP Secondary Schools Rugby team. The Girls team won the Championship Division of the BOP Secondary Schools Rugby Girls competition.

CRICKET: Congratulations to Anthony How who has been accepted into the U19 BOP Cricket team.

EQUESTRIAN: The equestrian team had a great day at the North Island games – they came third in the North Island!  Not many schools entered but it was a great result as the team that won had three members that had been to the world championships.

BASKETBALL Thomas Stebbing was named the Most Valuable Player for the Lake Taupo Basketball Association.

CROSS COUNTRY

The North Island Secondary Schools Cross Country relay was held on the 31st of August.  Nicole van der Kaay, Cameron Todd and Ella Dick were selected to represent the Waikato/Bay of Plenty in this event.  The junior girls team attained a second place behind an Auckland team, with Ella running first and Nicole last of the team of four.  Nicole got the fastest split in that team and a personal best for her in the wet hilly and muddy conditions.  Cameron Todd who was in the Senior B Team, came in third.

DARTS – Manawa Veitayaki won the King Country Darts Junior mixed pairs gaining a New Zealand title and he also came runner up in the Junior Boys pairs.

DUATHLON

The NZ Secondary School Duathlon Championships were held in Palmerston North on the 23rd of August.  Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding efforts: U19 – John Glanville, 2nd, Cameron Todd 5th, U16 – Josh Kenyon 3rd. U14 – Nicole van der Kaay 6th, Nicole Scott 9th

NETBALL – Congratulations to Christina Simeona who was recognized as an U15 player with potential at the recent Netball Waikato Region Festival.

RUGBY – Congratulations to Petio Emani for being selected as a Forward, and Ian Walker for selection as a Back in the King Country Rugby U16 Squad for 2009.

RUGBY LEAGUE – Congratulations to the TNT members of the Taupo Phoenix U15 team that won the Grand Final competition out of all the Bay of Plenty Rugby league teams.  This is the 5th year in a row that they have won overall in Bay of Plenty for their age division.

SQUASH – Congratulations to the following who placed 3rd in the Boys Division of the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Squash Championships for 2009: Shane Hemopo, Damian Hemopo, Mitchell Kane, Donald Liddall, Frank Sutton, Thomas Eatson

TABLE TENNIS – The BOP Table Tennis Junior Team championships were held on the 25th of August at Bethlehem College.  TNT Junior teams gained 1st and 2nd placement in the championships.  The winning team of Jayden Read, Ben Todd and Liam Brake beat the team of Shannon McSkimming, Fraser Williams and Sam Isaacs by 2 to 3 sets.

BOXING - Shannon McSkimming is the National Golden Glove Boxing Champion 46kg and under for 2009

CROSS COUNTRY - Waikato Bay of Plenty Cross Country held on the10th June 2009: 4th Junior Girls – Ella Dick, 5th Junior Girls – Nicole van der Kaay,  7th Senior Boys – Cameron Todd.

EQUESTRIAN - Scott Groombridge – 3rd in NZ Under 17 Eventing, NZ Pony Club Association in June 2009

KARTING - Liam Lewis was 11th overall in his class out of 35 competitors, in the National Kart Championships – Junior Yamaha Class (under 17).

MIZUNO HALF MARATHON - Congratulations to the 26 senior students who started and finished this event on Sunday the 2nd August.  A special mention to John Glanville and Shea Reardon, who were the first Taupo male and female runners home. 

MOUNTAINBIKING The Waikato/BOP Mountainbiking Champs took place at Peters School in Cambridge on 29th July. Those that took part were: Jack Bayley, Isaac Bradley, Matt Cederwall, Ryan Hunt, James Norris, Brett Stokman, Ben Watson and James Weal. It was a mud bath and the school van even managed to get stuck before the event even began. All riders rode well and Brett Stokman managed a 4th place.

RUGBY - Michael Hayes, Thomas Orr, Nick Barnes, Pakome Te Ao, Ayden Inglis, Brent Haggart-Kelly and Manawa Veitayaki have all been selected for the King Country U14 Rugby Team 2009.

SAILING - Keith Inglis – Top New Zealander in the Optimist Sailing at the Singapore Nationals, out of 234 participants.

SKIING - Congratulations to Ella McGill who came 2nd in the Open Womens Freestyle Skiing competitions, held 1 & 2 August. 

SNOWBOARDING - Congratulations to Hannah Orchard who gained 1st place in the Moro Series Open Womens Freestyle snowboarding competition held 1 & 2 August.

SQUASH - Two Boys teams took part in the BOP Team Champs at the end of last term. The team consisting of Shane Hemopo, Damian Hemopo, Mitchell Kane, Donald Liddall, Frank Sutton and Thomas Easton finished a commendable 3rd and the 2nd team of Thomas Orr, Jevon Williams, Jamie Masters, Cameron van der Kaay, Hamish Nixon and Liam Brake came 10th.

The girls team consisting of Chantal Taylor, Amanda Wade, Karly Schumacher,Jade Maisey and Lauren Stewart played well especially since for most of them this was their first ever tournament. They came 6th.

TRIATHLON

John Glanville, Cameron Todd, Josh Kenyon and Shea Reardon have all been selected for the Triathlon New Zealand Youth Academy 2009/2010.  There were only 19 people selected from all around NZ this year, and three are from our college!

Basketball - Taupo U17 Girls Representatives - Cala-Jane Chapman. Chelsea Katene, Nadia Matautia, Waimarie Stone, Samantha Mita-Morgan, Tuno Wawatai

The BMX Nationals were held in Whangarei at Easter. It was a huge event with over 800 riders competing. Year 10 student Brett Wilkie came out with a National ranking of 21st in the 14 years age group.

Duathlon - The Lakes, Tauranga - Taupo-nui-a-Tia College Team 3rd Overall

Nicole Van der Kaay - 2nd Junior Girl, Frank Sutton - 4th Junior Boy

Equestrian - On Friday 3 April our elite dressage riders competed in the North Island Secondary Schools Dressage Champs at St Peters' school in Cambridge and came 3rd overall. Team: Emma Cowie, Emma Dryden, Bryar Kirkeby, Melissa Collins

Football - U16 Waikato Bay of Plenty representative team - Danyon Drake, Finn Smith, Toby Tulett, U14 Waikato Bay of Plenty representative team - Reid Drake

BADMINTON The TNT Badminton team qualified for the BOP/Waikato Championships again in 2008 and performed very well, then went on to retain the Hardisty Trophy first competed for in 2007, winning 30 of 34 games.  Teams were - Girls, Grace Senior, Jade Peters, Jessica Williams, Melanie Cooper, Chantal Lesene, and Boys, Jamie Carson, Jack Delves, Mitchell Kane, Tama Merriman and Potiki Te Rangiita.

CLAY TARGET SHOOTING Murray Luke Memorial Trophy – held 22 May 2008. TNT had two teams competing, several boys participating for the first time.  158 shooters from all over the North Island entered.  TNT boys James Cannard and Zane Waenga shot well and Jamie Hall had his best day out yet.  Rory Ward was straight into the number one team for his first tournament, and Michael Wilkie   just missed out on an Individual Top Three placing.  Tauranga Boys College won the trophy this year
